With a rock-solid 13.72-second run, round No. 5 of the 2013 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo went to Canadian champion Lisa Lockhart and her ever-consistent buckskin gelding An Oakie With Cash, better known by covetous fans as “Louie.” The Oelrichs, S.D., team edged 2012 World Champion Mary Walker’s 13.73 on 2012 WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year Perculatin (“Latte”) by a sliver of a second to make the trip to tonight’s gold buckle ceremony at South Point Hotel and Casino. The run also moved Lockhart from fifth to second in the average, which pays $47,776 to win.

“He’s just so consistent,” Lockhart says of the 9-year-old gelding by Biebers Oakie out of Lady Kaweah Cash, by Judge Cash. “As long as I do my job, he just does his. He’s just a horse that is so willing to please. He was a bit sharper tonight than he has been. I knew that he’d maybe been struggling to figure the ground out a little bit, but tonight he felt so gritty. We came in and sat to turn on his first one and I thought right then and there that was the difference. I didn’t think we were going to win the round necessarily, but it just felt so much better.”

This is Lockhart’s seventh WNFR qualification. She also has Fast An Gold (“Chisum”) waiting in the wings, but after Louie’s strong showing tonight, the South Dakota cowgirl says Chisum is “back on vacation again.” lisalockhart5

“I did get on Chisum and ride him a little bit, but I thought ‘Heaven forbid.’ I don’t want to get off of Louie. He’s been a slow starter the last couple years. Last year, I panicked. This year, I did not panic after the first round when we were long, just knowing it might take him a little while.”

Mary Walker and Perculatin (“Latte”) made their strongest run of the week thus far with a 13.73. Third place was split three ways between Christy Loflin on Sheza Blazin Move (“Movin”), Taylor Jacob on Honor Thy Frenchman (“Bo”) and Sherry Cervi on MP Meter My Hay (“Stingray”) with their identical 13.82-second runs. Shada Brazile picked up another sixth-place check on Dial It Fast with a 13.93. Round No. 5 also saw some horse changes when Fallon Taylor called on Nicks Nefertiti (“Neffy”), a full sister to her WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year, Flos Heiress (“Babyflo”). Jane Melby borrowed Bendi Dunn’s JM Alive N Perquix (“Perk”), a 2005 mare by Perks Alive out of Lacy Sporty Girl, by Quixote Sizelove.
