The subject of jeans can get problematic (but also fun) is when the potential wearer has to choose from the plethora of designers, washes, cuts and colors that are available in modern fashion. Stand in front of a jean wall at any retail store, and your head will spin from all the decisions you have to make. Do you want a high rise waistband or low rise? Do you want boot cut or “skinny” jeans? Do you prefer distressed and embellished styles or clean and classic looks? The list goes on and on.

While picking the right jeans to reflect your needs, style and character always comes down to personal preference, there are some general principals you can follow to help make the task of buying the perfect jeans less daunting. Megan Iwersen, Vice President of Apparel at Ariat International, suggests these simple guidelines to keep you cool and collected—not frazzled and frustrated—next time you’re in the fitting room.

1. Buy jeans that fit. Don’t be trapped by a number! No matter what the label says, try on a few sizes in your typical range to find your true size in that particular jean. You want to look and feel good. Your jeans should flatter your body type, while fitting comfortably with no binding or pinching. Everyone looks better when they’re in their true size.

2. Identify your need or occasion. Generally, lighter washes and heavier distressed jeans are considered daywear, while darker, cleaner finishes are viewed as “going out” jeans. Depending on your budget, it’s good to have a range of washes and styles in your wardrobe to suit your moods and wearing occasions. But with today’s tight economy, if you have to choose, pick a clean, versatile jean in a medium to darker wash that will work for both day and evening occasions.

3. Consider the right “rise” for your shape. Everyone wants to be trendy, but again, you’ll always look better in a fit that is appropriate for your body shape. As far as waistbands go, too high of a “rise” (where the waistband sits on your body) can create a “pooch” that can make you look like you have a bigger belly. On the other hand, too low of a rise can cause your stomach to spill over the waistband, creating the dreaded “muffin top.” It is better to find a waistband that sits comfortably at your waist. Also, don’t forget to check the back rise of the waistband of any jean you buy. It should be high enough to provide decent coverage when sitting—this is especially important for riding.

4. Look for quality details. If you want your jeans to last for a while, remember that quality is in the details. Important particulars include ring-spun fabric, comfort inseams, anchored belt loops, sturdy zippers and quality hardware.

5. Highlight or enhance your figure. Here are some important facts about fit: Forward facing side seams, boot cuts and well-placed “fading,” as well as hand sanding on the leg, can elongate and slim your legs. Additionally, well-placed and designed back pockets can either slim or enhance your backside. To slim, look for pockets that are not placed too far from the center seam, as well as pockets sized proportionally to the seat. If you want to enhance, look for back pockets with flaps or a lot of embroidery design.

6. Consider your shoes. Finally, always try to bring the type of shoes you intend to wear into the fitting room; cowboy boots and stilettos will likely have different jean requirements. If you want to show off your boot shafts, think about buying a pair of stretch skinny jeans. These jeans are hot right now and fit comfortably inside the boot.
