“Extreme Retired Racehorse Makeover”
Dreaming of Three Founder’s Dreams Come True
Event to be held August 2, at the Simmons Equestrian Center in
Negley, Ohio to showcase the versatility of the Retired Thoroughbred
NEGLEY, OHIO—Barrel racer, Jackie Harris, founder of the non-profit organization, Dreaming of Three, always had a dream of having a barrel race for rescued horses in order to save their lives and to give them a second chance. After mentioning this idea to many in the equine community, she received much support and excitement from Thoroughbred professionals and also barrel racing professionals.
“The Extreme Retired Racehorse Makeover Barrel Race”
In the past three years, nearly 86,000 thoroughbreds have been registered as foals, according to Jockey Club statistics. After their time on the track is over, these horses need to find a second career. The lucky ones find their way into rescues, but finding homes for them is difficult without training. Dreaming of Three’s event will train 12 of these horses, giving them a second chance.
This event will consist of two segments, a judged free style portion and a timed barrel race. It will be held on August 2, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Simmons Equestrian Center in Negley, Ohio. Twelve off-the-track thoroughbreds (OTTB) and 12 selected trainers will be the center of this event. The twelve trainers will be selected from applications taken from now until March 1 and will be selected based on experience, references and facility approval. They will have 100 days to train their OTTB. During these 100 days, Dreaming of Three will follow their progress via blogs, social media, and the Dreaming of Three website.
Jackie stated, “This event is truly a dream come true. I hope by holding this event, it will help save some lives of the OTTB in the future, as we are proving that they are capable in all disciplines.” The hope of Dreaming of Three and Team DO3 is to hold this event annually and to eventually add an Open OTTB barrel race and a Youth OTTB barrel race to the Event. The funds from the event this year will benefit CANTER and also a local OTTB rescue, Bright Futures Farm.
