Hi-Pro Feeds/Barrel Horse News Sponsors Charmayne James, Scamper & Clayton Appearance at OKC
For more than two decades, simply saying “Charmayne” and “Scamper” has identified them immediately.
Thousands of fans all over the world can remember the day they saw them at a rodeo, or even better, got to talk to Charmayne or have their picture taken with the two of them.
Charmayne James acquired Scamper (Gills Bay Boy) when she was only eleven years old, and trained the former feed lot horse to be a champion. From 1984 to 1993, the pair won an unprecedented 10 Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Championships, making James the All-Time Leading Money earner in Barrel Racing, the first Million Dollar Cowgirl, and the holder of more World titles than any woman in professional sports. Scamper became the most celebrated and recognizable horse in the world of rodeo.
With Scamper now 31, the opportunities to see barrel racing’s true legend are limited. But, thanks to Hi-Pro Feeds, he will make a final appearance during the Barrel Futurities of America’s Oklahoma City Futurity in December.
“We took him to the NFR once about ten years ago,” said Charmayne. “He really enjoyed the attention and people loved the opportunity to see him and get their picture taken with him. As part of our promotion of the new and improved Scamper’s Choice feed, Hi-Pro Feeds is sponsoring his appearance at Oklahoma City, and Barrel Horse News came on board as a sponsor, as well .”
For most barrel racers, a chance to see Scamper would be enough reason to make the trip to Oklahoma City, but there will be another celebrity present along with Scamper and Charmayne – Scamper’s clone, Clayton. The bay colt carries identical genes to the winningest horse in barrel racing history.
Since Scamper had been gelded as a colt, James decided to clone him so that his legacy could live on through a breeding program. Teaming with ViaGen, the Austin, Texas-based leader in animal cloning, Clayton was created.
Visitors to Oklahoma City can see not only the most celebrated horse in the history of rodeo, but also the future of the industry – all at the same time.
Scamper and Clayton will be appearing at the Hi-Pro Feed Scamper’s Choice Stalls at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds for photo and autograph sessions on December 12 - 13.
